When you create an Alert in Mention, you have the option of monitoring data in two distinct ways: Keyword Searches and Monitored Pages. Keyword searching is the primary method of monitoring data online for your Alerts. When you create an alert, you are required to add keywords in order for Mention to begin fetching online posts.

In your Mention Feed, you will receive new mentions when your keywords appear in online publications or conversations. These mentions will be filtered and categorized by different Sources based on information provided by the website. In this article, we will present you with information about the Sources that Mention can keyword crawl.

Mention can keyword crawl the following sources:

  • Twitter

  • Forums

  • Reddit

  • Blogs

  • Videos

  • News

  • Web

💡Mention Tip: Please note that Mention offers additional sources for monitoring with Monitored Pages such as Facebook Business Page Comment Crawling and Review Site monitoring. Monitored Pages are not required but they are a great way to enhance your online searches.

Let’s go deeper into each source to better understand what results you can get!

Facebook

Mention can monitor Facebook in two ways:

Facebook Keyword Crawling

Within a Mention Alert, you can monitor any public business page from Facebook as a Monitored Page. Monitored Pages allow you to fetch all of the posts and comments from specific Facebook Page URLs.

Within your Alert Editing Page, you will have access to the Social Pages tab where you can paste the Facebook Page URLs you want to monitor and set up specific monitoring configurations.

For Facebook Monitored Pages, you have the following monitoring options:

  • You can monitor all of the new posts that the Facebook page publishes

  • You can monitor all of the comments that are made on posts from the Facebook page

⚙️ When a comment is fetched from Facebook Monitored Pages, they will be listed as Unknown in your Feed. This is due to the fact that Mention cannot display the profile names of users in the platform:

❗You can only add Facebook Business Page URLs to the Monitored Pages tab. You cannot use Monitored Pages to monitor Facebook Profiles or Facebook Groups.

Instagram

Mention can fetch all posts from specific Instagram Public Business page URLs that are added into your alert. You can monitor these profiles by pasting the page URL into your Social Pages tab in the Alert:

⚙️ Before adding an Instagram URL to the Alert, please connect an Instagram Business Page to Mention. For more information, check out this article: Connect an Instagram Business Account to Mention

❗️Mention does not fetch comments from Instagram posts. We will only display new posts from the Instagram pages on your Feed.

Twitter/X

Mention can monitor posts from Twitter/X accounts. Mention will fetch tweets and retweets that match the keywords in your alert.

Forums

Mention can monitor posts and comments that are shared on public Forum websites.

❗If the Forum is not public or content from the forum is restricted by a login page, Mention will not crawl the Forum post.

Reddit

Mention can fetch content from public sub-reddits. If your keyword matches a post or comment, it will appear in your Feed.

With regards to Reddit, Mention will provide:

  • A preview of the subreddit with the ability to view the publication and comments that appeared when the mention was retrieved.

  • The ability to share the mention to your colleagues or open the post on Reddit's main platform.

  • The following KPIs for your Analytics: Reach, Volume, Sentiment, Language, Days of Activity, Topics, and Time of Activity.

⚠️Source Limitations

  • Mention does not crawl private subreddits. You will only receive mentions from public subreddits when your keywords match the online publications.

  • Mention has the ability to fetch content from 18+ posts and threads; however, they will not preview in your Feed. To view these posts, you will need to open the mention in a new tab and view it directly on the Reddit site.

  • If your account has access to historical data, you can fetch historical Reddit mentions.

  • At this time, you cannot monitor specific subreddits on your alerts. When your keyword appears on any public subreddit, Mention will fetch it.

Blogs

Mention can monitor posts made on Blog websites. The system will fetch Blog posts when your keywords appear in the title or body of the Blog post.

Videos

Mention will categorize data as 'Videos' when the main content of the page is a video and your keywords appear on the website.

News

Mention will fetch News mentions when the title or body of the article include your keywords. Mention has the ability to monitor local news sites as well as multi-national news sites.

⚠️Source Limitations

  • Mention cannot monitor the comments made on News sites.

  • Mention cannot monitor certain news sites that have paywalled content.

Web

Mention will crawl website mentions that match your keywords search in the title or body of a post.

Why is a page marked as a Web mention?

Mention utilizes Machine Learning (Artificial Intelligence) to categorize the content that is brought into your account. Our technology takes a look at several specificities of the website such as it's structure, lexical field, etc. Mention compares the information from new mentions to information that is already known from previous mentions.

If our system cannot categorize your mention by News, Forums, Reddit, or Blog, then it will be marked as Web.

⚠️Source Limitations

  • In general, Mention will only crawl a webpage once, when it's originally published.

Can I manually change the source of a mention?

Mention offers the ability to monitor different Sources from online channels on the web.

This information cannot be edited through Mention due to the fact that the Source of a mention is fetched directly from the encoding of the website it comes from. Mention takes online data and feeds it into your Feed, but we do not provide the option to convert its original configurations.
