Tags are an excellent way to categorize your mentions into subfolders. Within your Alert, you have the option of creating Tags to label the mentions that appear in your Feed.

Depending on your monitoring needs, Tags will serve multiple purposes:

  • If you are conducting brand monitoring, you can use tags to label your mentions by specific sub-topics such as important stakeholders, products, or campaigns.

  • If you are monitoring multiple competitors in a single alert, you can use tags to categorize your mentions by each competitor.

  • If you are monitoring a broad topic, you can use tags to hone in on specific topics that interest you.

In your Mention account, you can manually tag mentions or set up an automatic tag to save time. Both options will benefit you in distinct ways. In this article, we will go over the following topics:

Let's begin!

Create a Tag Folder

You have the option of creating a tag folder through the Feed or Alert Settings page. In this section, we will teach you how to create a Tag Folder using these two options.

--

Option 1 - Create a Tag in the Feed:

In order to create a new Tag Folder on the Feed, you will need to find a mention and open the mention preview. From there, you will see a tag button that appears at the top of the preview:

Once you click on this button, you can type the name of your new tag folder and the option to save the tag will appear:

You're all set from there! Your new tag folder will be created and the mention that you used to create the tag folder will automatically be added to your folder.

⚙️ If your alert already has multiple tags created, you can still use these steps to create a new tag folder in the Feed.

For example, in this alert, we have 4 tags created:

If you would like create a new tag, simply write the name of the tag and you will be given the option to save the new label in your Feed.

--

Option 2 - Create a Tag in Alert Settings:

You can create and manage your tag folders directly through the Alert Settings page. When you open the Alert Settings page, you will see a tab titled Alert Tags. Please click on this tab:

On this page, you can click on the Create Tag option and a pop-up will appear with the option to add the tag name and configure automatic tagging:

Once you have set your preferences, you can click on Save and you're all set!

⚙️ This section is where you can create automatic tags or edit your tag folders which we will go over in the next few sections.

Manual Tags

Manual Tags allow you to label any mention manually in your Alert. You can manually tag mentions directly in your Feed when you find specific content that interests you.

To manually tag a mention, follow these steps:

  1. Find the mention that interests you and click on the Add Tag button.

  2. A list of tags that you created will appear and you can choose one or multiple tags depending on your preference.

  3. You're all set from there! The tags will be applied to the mention.

We recommend using manual tags when you want to control the content that goes into each specific tag folder for your alerts.

⚙️ If you would like to un-tag a mention, please open the mention and use the tag folder button to remove any tag labels you want:

Automatic Tags

Automatic Tags will automatically label mentions that contain a specific word or phrase. They are great to use when you have a specific topic in mind for your tag folders.

To create an automatic tag, please follow these steps:

  1. Open the Alert Settings page and find the Alert Tags tab.

  2. From there, you can click on the option Create Tag and a pop-up will appear.

  3. Fill out a name for your tag and then head over to the Auto-Tag Settings. In this section, you can fill out the word or phrase that you want to use for your auto tagging.

  4. (Optional) - If you click on the apply to previous mentions box, Mention will retroactively apply tags to content that is already in your Feed.

  5. Once your configurations are set, you can click on Save.

⚙️ You have the option of adding multiple words or phrases to the auto-tag settings box. Mention will automatically tag a post in your Feed if at least one of the words or phrases appears in the publication.

💡 If you created a manual tag in your alert, you can convert it to an automatic tag by heading into the Alert Tags page and editing the tag. Simply click on the 3 dots that appear next to the tag to open the editing page for your tag folder:

Review Tagged Mentions

Once a tag folder is created, you will see a TAGS tab appear within your Alert. You can click on this drop-down menu to open the list of tag folders created for your alert:

This drop-down menu will display all of the tag folders that are created in your alert. You can navigate through each folder to review the mentions that are tagged.

💡In your Feed, Mention will also apply a label to each mention that has received one or multiple tags:

These labels will appear in every inbox or folder you are accessing from your alert including your main inbox, unread inbox, favorites inbox, and tag folders.

Edit or Delete Tag Folders

You can modify or delete your tag folders at any time through the Feed or Alert Settings:

--

Edit or Delete Tags in the Feed:

On the Feed, you will see an Edit button that appears next to the title of your Tag. If you click on this button, a pop-up will appear where you can change the title of the tag, configure auto-tag settings, and delete the tag:

In this section, you will need to find the tag that you want to edit and click on the 3 dots that appear next to the folder. Tags & Analytics - Reports & Insights Center

You can utilize tag folders to dive into key metrics within your Mention Reports and Insights Center graph visualizations. In your analytic tools, you will have the following resources:

--

"Tag" Metric:

Mention has a dedicated Tag segmentation that is available within Reports and the Insights Center. This segmentation will provide you with the number of mentions that each tag folder contains:

You can utilize this metric to review the quantity of mentions that you are receiving for specific topics that interest you in your alert. This metric will come in handy especially when you are using automatic tags to label content from the Feed.

Let's go over some ways you can use the Tag metric below:

Tag Metric in the Insights Center

The Tag segmentation is available at any time. To create this visualization, please follow these steps:

  1. Choose the alert you want to review.

  2. Choose the Tags segmentation.

  3. Choose the visualization you want such as bar chart, pie chart, or anything else.

  4. (Optional) - Feel free to use the filters menu to hone in on specific data points that interest you. You can filter by time period, sources, countries, and more.

Tag Metric in Mention Reports

The Tag segmentation is not automatically included in your Mention Reports. You will need to manually add the graph to your reports by following these steps:

  1. Open the Report that you want to edit with the Tag graph.

  2. Click on Edit and and then scroll to the bottom of the report where you will see the +Add Module button.

  3. From here, you can create the visualization that you want to add by choosing the alert, Tag segmentation, and visualization.

  4. (Optional) - Feel free to add any filters to the graph if you would like.

  5. (Optional) - Once the configurations are set, you can move the graph to any area of your Report by clicking on the graph and dragging it.

  6. You're all set from there!

⚙️ Report editing is only available on the Mention Company Plan.

💡 You can create the Tag graph for Listening, Comparative, and Custom Reports in Mention.

Filter by Tags in Analytics:

Within your Analytic tools, you have the option of filtering graphs or entire Reports with Tag filters:

We recommend utilizing Tag filters when you want to dedicate an entire dashboard to specific mentions that interest you. For example, if you have a tag folder dedicated to a specific product, you can create an entire report for that product.

Let's go over ways you can filter your analytics by Tags in Mention:

Apply Tag Filters in the Insights Center

Within the Insights Center, the Filter menu will appear on the right-hand side of your page after you create a graph. In the Tag section, you have the option of including or excluding tags from your graph:

As you apply your tags to the graph, you will notice that the visualizations will adjust in real time.

Apply Tag Filters in Reports (Pro, Pro Plus)

If you are on the Pro or Pro Plus subscription, you can apply your tag filters during report creation. Please follow these steps to apply tags to your Report:

  1. Head over to the Reports tab and create a Listening or Comparative report depending on your needs.

  2. After you have set the configurations of your Mention Report, you will need to click on the Advanced Presets button to access the Filter menu.

  3. From there, head over to the Tag section and choose the tag or tags that will be used for the report.

  4. You're all set from there!

⚙️ You can only apply filters to Listening or Comparative reports.

❗ Please make sure your filters are set before creating the Report. On the Pro and Pro Plus plan, you cannot edit reports after they are created.

Apply Tag Filters in Reports (Company Plan)

If you are on the Company plan, you can apply tag filters to your reports during report creation or in the report edit mode.

During Report Creation, you will need to access the Advanced Presets menu to apply your Tags:

In Report Edit Mode, you can modify any graph to apply a tag filter or exclude tagged mentions. All you need to do is edit the graph you want to modify and heading into the filter menu:

⚙️ You can only apply tag filters to Listening, Comparative, Mentions List, and Custom Reports.

Technical Information

Before we conclude, we want to leave you with some technical insights regarding the configuration of Tags:

  • Each tag is unique to one alert. When you create a tag, it will only appear on the alert that it was created for. Tags will not intersect across multiple alerts.

  • You can create up to 100 tags in one alert.

  • Each automatic tag can contain up to 100 keywords.

  • You cannot create a tag with special characters in the title such as @, #, or $.

Altogether, Tags are a great way to compartmentalize the mentions in your Feed by organizing them into dedicated folders. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected]!
