This article is designed to teach you how to filter mentions to specific countries in the three different alert types. It will also show you how to include mentions that do not have geolocation data.

Please note that Mention only provides the ability to filter per country - not by city or state.

Basic Alerts

Within your Mention Alerts, you have the option of applying a country filter that will allow you to monitor or block specific countries from your keyword search. Mention utilizes data from the web and social media to identify the location of each publication we fetch to your account.

Configuring Country Filters

You can configure country filters at any time in the alert configuration page. When you create or edit an alert, the configuration page will display a tab titled Countries and Languages:

By default, your alert will be set to monitor All Countries and will monitor any publication that mentions your keywords, even if the mention does not provide country data.

To monitor specific countries:

  1. Click on the slider titled 'I want to select specific countries' to make the country menu appear.

  2. Select the countries you wish to monitor.

📖 Tip: If you decide to monitor specific countries, we recommend clicking on the Unknown Country filter to ensure you do not miss relevant data from websites that do not display their country data.

⚙️ If you modify your alert with country filters after alert creation, Mention will begin to monitor new mentions with the country preferences in mind.

💡 Bonus Tip: The Alert Creation Assistant will provide you with recommendations for country or language filters in your alert. After you create a keyword search, the assistant will let you know which countries and languages mention your keywords the most.

Standard Alerts

You can modify your country filters at any time using the alert configuration page. When you create or edit an alert, the Alert Creation page will display a tab titled Countries and Languages.

By default, your Alert will be monitoring all countries. To choose specific countries to monitor:

  1. Click on the slider titled 'I want to monitor specific countries' to gain access to the country menu.

  2. Select the countries you wish to monitor.

📖 Tip: Similar to Basic Alerts, we recommend using the Unknown Country filter to ensure you do not miss relevant data from websites that do not display their country data.

Advanced Alerts

Within the Advanced Alert, you have access to boolean operators dedicated to monitoring or blocking countries from your alerts. The operators available are:

  • source_country: This operator allows you to monitor or block countries using their dedicated ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes.

  • -has:source_country This operator will monitor mentions that do not have a country code.

Examples

To monitor specific countries:

"Nike Air Max" AND source_country:(FR OR ES)

This query will fetch mentions when the text "Nike Air Max" appears in publications from France or Spain.

To monitor mentions without a country code:

Starbucks AND (source_country:(FR) OR -has:source_country)

This query will fetch mentions from France and from websites that do not have a listed country code.

⚙️ The country operators will only fetch mentions from Web, News, Blogs, Forums, and Twitter/X. If you need to create a query to monitor other sources and specific countries, please contact your dedicated account manager.

Sources Without Geolocation Data

Unfortunately, not every article or social mention informs us of the country it comes from. When this happens, we mark these mentions as undetected.

Mention Fetches Geolocation Data for the Following Sources:

  • Facebook

  • Twitter*

  • Instagram**

  • Forums

  • Blogs

  • Video

  • News

  • Web

  • Pinterest

  • YouTube

  • Twitter Monitored Page

  • Review Pages

Sources with an asterix may be subject to additional restrictions, listed below.

Geolocation Info is not Fetched for the Following Sources:

  • Radio & TV in Us & Canada

  • TikTok

  • Facebook Monitored Pages

  • Instagram Monitored Pages

  • Linkedin

  • LinkedIn Monitored Page

Twitter Source Country: On July 9th, 2024, X (Twitter) made changes to its API. Due to the changes, we can no longer determine the country the post originated from, in most cases. Going forward, the country will be deduced from the geolocation based on the place/location tagged in the tweet itself. This means that an individual would need to click on “location” and tag their location while they are writing the post, in order for a geolocation to be determined. If the location is not tagged, we cannot determine which country the post came from.

This new method does not match:

  • Retweets, as the location is tied to the original post.

  • Quote Tweets, as the location is also tied to the original post.

As a result, you might see fewer mentions, since mentions without a tagged location are no longer matched.

Instagram Source Country: Mention uses information from the author's profile to determine the location. As such, many users opt not to share their location information. Therefore, we recommend including Unknown Country if you are monitoring Instagram.

⚙️ For instructions on how to monitor mentions that do not have geolocation data, please see the rest of the guide below.

How To Monitor Mentions without Country Information

Unfortunately, not every article or social mention informs us of the country it comes from. When this happens, we mark these mentions as undetected.

Basic Alerts

To ensure you track mentions without country data codes:

  1. Hover over the alert you want to adjust and click on Edit.

  2. In Alert Settings, you will see Monitored Countries. Uncheck the 'All Countries' box to access the drop-down menu.

  3. Check the box titled Get Mentions without Country Information.

  4. Save your alert.

Standard Alerts

To monitor mentions without country information:

  1. Hover over the alert you want to adjust and click on Edit.

  2. In Alert Settings, you will see Monitored Countries. Uncheck the 'All Countries' box to access the drop-down menu.

  3. Check the box titled Get Mentions without Country Information.

  4. Save your alert.

Advanced Alerts

To monitor mentions without country information using a Boolean Query, add the following operator:

-has:source_country

Example query:

"Nike Air Max" AND -has:source_country

This query will fetch mentions of "Nike Air Max" from undetected countries.

Combining Specific and Undetected Countries

You can combine specific countries and undetected countries in the same query. For instance:

"Nike Air Max" AND (source_country:(FR) OR -has:source_country) AND lang:fr

This query will fetch mentions of "Nike Air Max" either from France or from undetected countries, provided the mentions are in French.
