The Historical Data feature allows you to collect mentions from up to two years in the past. You can activate this feature during alert creation to fetch relevant data regarding the topics you are monitoring.

At this time, historical mentions are available for the following sources:

  • Web

  • Blogs

  • Forums

  • News

  • Twitter/X

  • Facebook

  • TV & Radio (USA and Canada)

❗ Historical Data is not available for these sources

  • TikTok

  • YouTube

  • Pinterest

  • Instagram

  • LinkedIn

💡 Historical Data is an add-on feature available to the Company Plan. If you would like to learn more about this feature, please contact your account manager.

⚙️ You can only activate Historical Data during alert creation. You cannot edit an alert and re-activate Historical Data during alert editing.

In the next section, we will teach you how to use the Historical Data feature:

Activate Historical Data

Now that you understand some of the configurations of Historical Data, it is time to activate the feature in your account. Please follow the steps below:

1. Create an Advanced Alert

On your Feed, please click on the Add a new alert button and choose the Advanced Alert to open your alert creation page:

On the alert creation page, you can begin to write out the search query that you want to monitor online. Once your query is set, you can move on to the next step!

⚙️ Historical Data is only available on Advanced Alerts. You cannot activate Historical Data on the Basic or Standard alert.

2. Toggle the 'Activate History' Button

On the right-hand side, you will see a slider titled Activate History. Please toggle this slider to open the Historical Data pop-up menu.

3. Choose the Time Period

When you toggle the Historical Data button, Mention will display a preview with the number of mentions you will automatically receive from the past 30 days:

By default, Historical Data is set to the last 30 days, but you can change the time period by clicking on the drop-down menu:

💡 As you adjust the time period, Mention will display the number of mentions that will automatically be deducted from your Quota:

  • If the expected number appears in green, you can activate the query.

  • If the expected number appears in yellow, you do not have enough available quota to activate the query. You will need to contact your account manager to increase the number of mentions in your account.

Once you are all set with your desired configurations for Historical Data, you can go ahead and create your Alert! Mention will automatically begin fetching the mentions into your account.

Editing Your Alert Before Historical Data is Fetched

When the Mention system is fetching Historical Data, you will not be able to modify your Alert until all the mentions will be fetched. This is to ensure that the Mention system fetches the accurate data you seek in your original Alert configurations. If you were to change your boolean query midway during the historical fetching, you may miss some important data.

Once the Advanced Alert is created with Historical Data, you will see a loading bar appear in your Alert setup. This will show you the status of your Historical Data fetching. During this time, Mention will begin to search for historical and new mentions at the same time.

Historical Data Specifications

  • Mention can only fetch Historical Data up to two rolling years.

  • When you create your query and you have Historical Data for Twitter/X activated, your boolean query has a limit of 2048 characters. If you need to bypass 2048 characters, please contact your account manager to discuss query adjustments!

  • The NEAR operator will not function with Historical Data. You will run into an error

  • If your query uses the source_country: operator, you will not receive Facebook historical data before November 2020.

Thank you! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact [email protected] or your account manager.
