The Mention Feed is your data inbox: the place where all alerts and mentions are collected, organized, and curated. This article explains what the Feed is, the folders and areas it contains (Alert Overview, List of Alerts, Inbox Folders, List of Mentions, Mention Preview), and the actions you can perform on mentions (filtering, bulk actions, grouped mentions, replying, summarizing with AI, and more).

Table of Contents

Glossary

There are several key terms used throughout the Mention Platform and the Feed.

  • Alerts: An alert is the specific subject(s) that you want to monitor on Mention. Mention Alerts monitor the web and social media using text words or phrases. You can use an Alert to monitor your brand, competitors, a product, and more.

  • Mentions: A mention is a specific piece of content that is fetched into your account. Mentions contain the text words or phrases that you are monitoring in your alert. These mentions can vary from website articles to tweets and more.

How to Access the Feed

To access your Mention Feed, hover over the Navigation Bar and click on the Feed Icon at the top of your page.

Once opened, your Feed is laid out like an email inbox and is divided into three main sections:

  1. The List of Alerts

  2. The List of Mentions

  3. The Mention Preview

You will use these three panels to switch between alerts, browse mentions, and open a detailed preview with actions.

The Alert Overview Page Explained

The Alert Overview is now the landing page of your feed for an alert. It provides:

  • A snapshot of your main KPIs (volume, reach, sentiment).

  • A daily Alert Summary, an AI-driven summary of key topics and discussions from the previous day.

The Alert Summary highlights important topics and trends so you can quickly understand what happened without reading every mention.

How It Works

  • Accessing the Feature

    • When you access the Feed, you land on the Alert Overview page for that alert.

    • To view all mentions individually, click “View all mentions” from the “Last mentions” card or from the top bar.

  • Daily Summaries

    • Summaries and topics are generated daily at 3 AM UTC.

    • They are based on the last 1000 mentions from the previous day (12 AM–11:59 PM UTC).

    • The system uses the description and title fields of each mention to generate a concise overview of key topics.

  • Custom Date Selection

    • You can select a specific date to view the overview and summaries for that day.

    • Basic KPIs (volume, reach, sentiment) are shown based on the selected date in your timezone.

    • Summaries, however, are generated based on UTC time.

Notes & Limitations

⚠️ Tiered Access

  • All users can access the Alert Overview.

  • The Alert Summary is available only for free trial users and company plans.

⚠️ Date and Time Confusion

  • Because KPIs use your local timezone and summaries use UTC, you may see discrepancies between:

    • The mentions used in the summary, and

    • The mentions visible in the inbox for the same date.

⚠️ Daily Basis Only

  • The feature currently supports daily summaries only.

  • Summaries for other periods can be generated manually by the support team from the back office.

⚠️ Error Handling

  • If there are no mentions or if there is an error during summary generation, you may see:

    • An empty summary, or

    • A “no summary generated yet” error.

Using the Feature

  • Initial Setup

    • When creating a new alert, you will be directed to your inbox first (so you don’t land on a page with no data).

    • If you have access to the Alert Summary, the system will wait for the first generation of the summary before redirecting you to the overview.

  • Viewing Summaries

    • Summaries and topics are automatically updated each day.

    • To view mentions related to a specific topic, click View Mentions.
This makes it easier to track mentions connected to specific topics.

Setting Alert Overview as Non-Default

You can choose whether the Alert Overview is the default landing page.

  • To not set as Default: toggle OFF the option. Your Inbox will be your alert landing page.

  • To set as Default: toggle ON the option.

You can still access the Alert Overview at any time from within your alert. This customization allows you to adapt Mention to your own workflow.

Viewing the List of Alerts in the Feed

The List of Alerts is the first section in your Feed. It displays all alerts created in your account and lets you:

  • Open a specific alert.

  • See unread counts and pause status.

  • Create new alerts.

  • Change the order of alerts.

When you click the name of an alert, that alert opens and you can access its mentions.

What You See When an Alert Is Open

When you first open an alert, the Feed displays:

  • Title of the Alert: The name you gave your alert.

  • Total Mentions: The total number of mentions fetched since the alert’s creation.

  • Inbox Folders: The available inbox folders (Inbox, Unread, etc.) plus any Saved Filters you created.

  • Tags, Tasks, and Activity: Tabs showing tag folders and actions taken on your Mention Feed.

  • Unread Mentions: An icon showing how many mentions in this alert you haven’t reviewed.

  • Edit Icon (3 dots): Lets you edit your alert, pause your alert, or access the Report Creation Page.

💡 Mention Tip – Unread Mentions

If you hover over the unread mentions number, you will see the exact number of unread mentions in your alert.

Closed vs. Open Alerts

  • Closed alerts: Show only the name of the alert and the edit icon.

  • ⚙️ If you have unread mentions in an alert, you will see the unread number next to the alert name.

  • If your alert is paused, you will see an orange pause icon.

💡 Mention Tip – Distinguishing Between Open & Closed Alerts

  • In the Feed, an open alert is displayed with a white border.

  • Closed alerts have a silver coloring around them.

Actions in the List of Alerts

1. Create a New Alert

At the top of your Alert List, you will see the Add a New Alert button. Use this to create a new Basic, Standard, or Advanced Alert.

2. Change the Order of Alerts

You can change the order of your alerts by clicking and dragging them in your Feed. It is easier to move alerts if you close all alerts first.

Inbox Folders Explained

The Mention inbox provides a continuous stream of data into your Feed. Each alert includes pre-set inbox folders plus any Saved Filters you create.

Inbox

  • Function: Main inbox for all mentions fetched into your Alert.

  • Here you can scroll through mentions, filter them, and engage with content.

  • ⚙️ A blue number may appear next to Inbox — this indicates the number of unread mentions.

Unread

  • Shows all unread mentions in your account.

  • When you open an unread mention, it is removed from the Unread folder.

Priority

  • Gathers mentions that are marked as important by the influence score algorithm.

  • Mentions with a high influence score will appear here.

  • Use this inbox to track popular authors and influencers from your monitored searches.

⚙️ Automatic Curation

  • The Priority inbox folder is automatically curated by Mention.

  • You cannot manually add mentions to this folder.

💡 If you are generating an RSS Feed link, you can choose to share mentions from your Priority inbox.

Favorites

  • Displays mentions that you manually favorite from your Feed.

  • Curate this inbox by favoriting or un-favoriting mentions that matter to you.

Depending on your Mention subscription, you can share or analyze Favorites in different ways:

  • Generate an RSS Feed: When generating an RSS Feed link, you can choose to share mentions from your Favorites inbox.

  • Filter Analytics by Favorites: Filter Mention Reports and graphs in QuickChart using the Favorites inbox folder.

Archive

  • Stores mentions that you manually archive from the Feed.

  • When you archive a mention, it is removed from your main Feed but remains in your Analytics.

We recommend archiving mentions to keep your Feed clean without affecting your Reports.

Trash

  • Stores mentions you’ve deleted from your Feed using the trash bin icon.

  • Trashing a mention:

    • Removes it from your inbox, and

    • Removes it from your Analytics.

We recommend trashing mentions that are completely irrelevant to your monitoring (noise).

⚙️ If you accidentally trash a mention, go to the Trash folder and restore it using the trash bin icon.

Spam

  • The Spam folder is available when you need to remove mentions from:

    • Your inbox, and

    • Your analytics.

Spam is especially useful when combined with Block Domain or Block URL actions.

Saved Filters

  • If you create a Saved Filter, it will appear in your Feed below your Unread inbox folder.

  • Saved Filters are folders that display mentions using filters you configure in the Feed.

You can recognize a Saved Filter by the edit button next to its title. From the Feed, you can modify or delete a Saved Filter at any time.

Tags, Tasks, and Activity

Alongside inbox folders, each alert includes Tabs that relate to Feed-specific features.

Tags

  • The Tag drop-down menu displays all tag folders created in your specific alert.

  • Use it to review and adjust the configuration of your tags.

Tasks

  • If you are using Mention with multiple team members, you will have access to Tasks.

  • You can assign mentions to colleagues with a task description; these mentions appear in the Tasks tab.

❗ At this time, the description of a task is not displayed in the Tasks tab.
To review the task description, check your email. Mention will notify you of the task via email.

Activity

  • The Activity tab shows actions taken on your Feed by you or a team member.

  • For example, if a team member trashes a mention, that action appears here.

⚙️ If you click on a specific activity, you will see a preview of the curated mention.

View a List of Mentions

When you open an alert, the List of Mentions appears in the middle panel of your Feed. Mention displays content from the web and social media, along with:

  • A search bar, and

  • A filtering menu to curate your mentions.

Mini-Preview in the List View

The List of Mentions is displayed in what we refer to as the "mini-preview," a condensed version of your data. First, let’s look at what a mention preview includes.

Web Mentions

  • Website Logo & Source: If available, the website’s logo appears as an icon. Mention also displays the source of the content.

  • Website Domain: Shows the URL domain of the website that posted the content.

  • Title of Article: Displays the title of the web posting (news article title, blog title, etc.).

  • Content Preview: A short preview of the website’s content. The words or phrases monitored in your alert are highlighted in yellow.

  • Tags: If the mention is tagged, the relevant tag folders appear under the preview. If you have not created any tag folders, this area is blank.

  • Grouped Mention: If the mention is grouped with others, you will see the re-share symbol. Hover over it to review the other grouped mentions.

  • Sentiment: Each new mention is processed by Mention’s Sentiment system, which applies:

    • Positive sentiment (green dot)

    • Negative sentiment (red dot)

    • Neutral sentiment (no dot)

  • Date of Fetching: The date shown is when Mention found the content online.

    • To review the publishing date of the article, click the mention and open the original article.

Social Media Mentions

  • Logo & Social Platform: If the page has a profile photo, it appears here, along with the social media source.

  • Account Username / @ Handle: Shows the username or @handle, depending on the platform.

  • Page Name: Shows the name of the page, which may differ from the username (for example, Mention’s Facebook username is mentionapp, but the page name is Mention).

  • Post Preview: Shows the post caption; monitored words or phrases are highlighted in yellow.

  • Tags: Shows any tag folders linked to the mention; blank if none exist.

  • Sentiment: The Sentiment system applies positive, negative, or neutral sentiment (same as web mentions).

  • Date of Fetching: Again, this is the date Mention found the content online. To see the original publishing date, open the post.

Search and Filter Options

At the top of your List of Mentions, you will see:

The Search Bar

  • Use the search bar to look for words or phrases within the current list of mentions.

  • You can use this to modify your view and even apply search operators to hone in on specific content.

Action Buttons

There are four action buttons in the Feed:

  1. Mark all mentions as read

  2. Export mentions from the Feed in PDF, Excel, CSV, or TSV format

  3. Open the filter menu to filter mentions by sentiment, source, and more

  4. Expand the Feed to review your mention list in a wide-screen format

Curate the Mentions in your List

Across the List of Mentions, you can curate content, apply filters, and adjust the Feed view.

If you hover over a mention, action buttons appear at the bottom of that mention:

  • Favorite the mention.

  • Mark as unread.

  • Archive the mention.

  • Trash the mention.

  • Mark as spam.

  • Block the website / social media account from your alert:

    • This ensures that the alert no longer fetches content from that specific website URL or social media account.

Filter Mentions

When you click the Filter button, a menu appears where you can modify how your Feed is displayed.

You can use filters to focus on specific content from your alerts.

  • You can reset your filters manually by clicking the Reset filter button in the menu.

  • If you set up a view you want to reuse, we recommend saving the filter.

Filters are not automatically saved.
If you navigate away and then return to the alert, your filters will reset unless you saved them.

Expand the Feed View

The Expand Feed button expands the mention list to a full-screen view.

In this expanded view, the Feed provides a larger preview:

  • Full titles of web mentions

  • Longer text previews

  • The influence score of each mention

The influence score indicates the popularity and potential impact of a mention.

What are Grouped Mentions?

Mention groups mentions automatically to organize identical or very similar data:

  • The Grouped Mentions filter combines mentions that share similar text on a web page or social post.

  • Grouped Mentions help keep your Feed clean when the same content appears in multiple places.

You’ll notice grouped mentions in your Feed when they have the re-share symbol.

  • Hover over the symbol to see the URLs and influence score of the grouped mentions.

  • Clicking on one of the mentions opens it in a new tab.

Definitions

  • Parent mention:

    • The mention you see in your Feed with the grouped mention symbol.

    • Typically the first mention fetched into your Feed.

  • Children mention:

    • The mentions within the re-share symbol.

    • These share the same text content as the parent mention.

⚙️ How Does Mention Group Posts?

When a new mention appears in your Feed, Mention analyzes the text of the post.
If the content is similar to other mentions in your Feed, the posts are grouped together.

💡 Benefits of Grouped Mentions

Grouped Mentions reduce clutter in several common scenarios:

  • A press release posted on multiple websites → grouped into one mention.

  • A viral tweet → all retweets and shares grouped into one post.

  • A brand posting the same content across Facebook and Twitter/X → grouped in the Feed.

Turn off Grouped Mentions

Grouped Mentions are automatically turned on when you create a new alert.

You can change this in the filters tab:

  1. Open the Filters menu from the search bar.

  2. Go to the Group Mentions section.

  3. Choose whether to group or un-group mentions.

You can change this preference at any time.

Grouped Mentions in Reports

In Listening, Comparative, and Custom Reports, you will see Reach Graphs.

  • By default, mentions in these Reach Graphs are un-grouped.

  • You can group content to organize the list of mentions in these graphs if you see duplicates.

To Group Mentions in a Reach graph:

    1. Click on Edit Mode for your Report.

    2. Find the Reach graph and edit the graph.

    3. Scroll to the Group Mentions section.

    4. Choose the Group Mentions option.

    Helpful Tips:

    • Mention will automatically un-group mentions in Data Reports.

    • If you want to export mentions through your Feed, un-group them first.

    • If you feel that new mentions are missing in your Feed, try un-grouping mentions before scrolling through your content.

How to Perform Bulk Actions on Mentions

There are two methods to select mentions in the Feed:

  1. Manually select mentions

  2. Select mentions in bulk

These actions help you modify multiple mentions at once instead of handling them individually.

Manually Select Mentions

  • Hover over a mention and a checkbox appears next to it.

    • Click the checkbox on multiple mentions, even if they are scattered through your Feed.

  • Alternatively:

    • Click the checkbox next to one mention.

    • Hold the Shift key and move up or down using your arrow keys.

    • All mentions you scroll through will be selected.

Select Mentions in Bulk

This method lets you select all mentions in between two checked mentions.

Steps:

  1. Find the first mention and check it.

  2. Scroll to the top or bottom of your list to find the second mention.

  3. Hold the Shift key and click the second mention.

  4. All mentions between the first and second checked mentions will be selected.

When you select multiple mentions, you will see a bulk action menu appear on the right side of the screen.

Available Bulk Actions

Once you’ve selected mentions, you can apply any of the following actions:

  • Manually modify the Sentiment

  • Move mentions to Favorites

  • Move mentions to Archive

  • Tag your mentions

  • Move mentions to Trash

  • Move mentions to Spam

👉 Get the most of your Mention’s Feed by combining bulk selection with filters and Grouped Mentions.

The Mention Preview Explained

The Mention Preview is the final panel in your Feed and appears when you click on a mention.

The preview provides:

  • A direct view of the content from the web page or social post.

  • Dedicated action buttons at the top and bottom to curate or share mentions.

Web Mentions in the Preview

For web mentions, the Feed will display the original content from the website.

  • Mention highlights the keywords you’re monitoring in the article so you can easily see why the mention was fetched.

  • You can read through these web posts directly in the Feed at any time.

⚙️ This preview applies to the following web sources:

  • News

  • Forums

  • Blogs

  • Reddit

  • Videos

  • Web

Social Media Mentions in the Preview

For social media mentions, the Feed displays a unique preview of the original post.

  • Mention’s Feed preview provides the social media content from the platforms you are monitoring.

  • If you click on these posts, Mention opens them in a new tab.

⚙️ Unique actions for social media mentions:

  • Facebook: If you have a Facebook page connected to Mention, you can reply to Facebook mentions from your Feed.

Top Action Bar (Mention Preview)

At the top of the preview, you’ll see actions to curate the current mention:

  • Sentiment: Shows the sentiment automatically applied to the mention.

    • You can change the sentiment at any time by clicking the emoji.

  • Favorite: Mark the mention as favorite; it will appear in your Favorites folder.

  • Tag: Add or remove the mention from a tag folder.

    • You can also create a new tag folder from here.

  • Assign Mention: Assign the mention to another user in your account and send them a task.

    • Your colleague receives a task notification via email.

    • You can add a comment to the task when assigning the mention.

  • Archive: Manually archive or un-archive the mention.

    • Archived mentions appear in the Archive folder.

  • Trash: Manually trash the mention to remove it from your Feed.

    • Trashed mentions appear in the Trash folder, where you can un-trash them.

  • Spam: Mark the mention as spam to remove it from your Feed.

    • Spam mentions appear in the Spam folder, where you can un-spam them.

  • Copy Direct Link: Copies the original link of the web or social post to your clipboard so you can paste it anywhere.

  • Email Mention: Email the mention to any email address.

  • Share: Opens Publish, where you can share the mention on social media.

Bottom Section (Source & Influence)

Below your preview is a section with additional metadata:

  • Source:

    • For web mentions, shows the URL.

    • For social mentions, shows the social media account name.

    • Clicking this source opens the original post in a new tab.

  • Influence Score:

    • Ranks the popularity and potential impact of the mention with a number from 0–100.

  • Block Domain:

    • Clicking this button gives you the option to block the website URL or social media account URL from your alert.

    • Mention will stop fetching data from blocked URLs and move all mentions from that domain to your Spam inbox.

💡 Some social media mentions may also display the Reach Score, when available.

Assign Tasks to Team Members (from the Preview)

You can assign a mention to a team member from the Assign Mention action:

  1. Click Assign Mention / Assign Task in your Feed.

  2. A pop-up appears prompting you to:

    • Choose the team member, and

    • Leave them a task.

Mention will:

  • Send your colleague an in-app notification and an email about their task.

  • Display the assigned mention in the Task tab of your alert.

⚙️ The task comment is sent via email only.
The Task tab in the alert displays only the mention, not the written description.

Unblock URLs & Social Media Accounts

If you blocked a URL or social account from your alert:

  • Go to the Spam folder.

  • Hover over the blocked URL.

  • Click Un-Block to restore that domain for future monitoring.

❗ Mentions that were moved to Spam when you blocked the URL are not automatically restored to your main inbox. You must restore these mentions manually by hovering over them and un-spamming them.

Can I Reply to Social Media Mentions in the Feed?

If you interact with Facebook mentions in your Feed, fetched from Monitored Pages.

First, ensure your Social Accounts are connected to Mention. Once a Social Account is connected, your Feed will display options to:

  • Comment

  • Favorite

  • Re-share (when supported)

When you open a social media mention:

  • At the bottom of the Mention preview, you will see the profile image and profile name of the account you are replying with.

  • Clicking on the profile lets you switch profiles if you have access to multiple accounts.

Conclusion

The Feed is your foundation for social monitoring and social listening in Mention. We recommend checking your Feed every time you log in so you can quickly capture a snapshot of the conversations happening online.
